Beijing is a major historical centre for court-linked cloisonné production, collection and circulation.
Beijing is important to the history and modern identity of Chinese cloisonné, but a city label cannot substitute for workshop documentation. An object record should identify who made it, where each stage occurred and how that claim is supported.
Future fieldwork will map wire work, enamel filling, firing, polishing and gilding as separate activities rather than assuming one room performs the entire sequence.
