Jingdezhen porcelain
Jingdezhen porcelain is high-fired ceramic made in the Jingdezhen production system of Jiangxi, using porcelain stone and kaolin-rich body recipes with techniques such as cobalt underglaze painting.
Jingdezhen has supported changing networks of mines, preparation sites, kilns, painters, merchants and institutions over many centuries. The place name therefore describes a production system, not one uniform workshop style.
Porcelain bodies associated with Jingdezhen commonly combine porcelain stone with kaolin. Forming, drying, glazing and high-temperature firing interact: a visually white body alone cannot establish where an object was made.
Blue-and-white ware places cobalt decoration beneath a transparent glaze. Useful examination views include the profile, interior, foot, exposed body, glaze in raking light and any documented kiln or workshop provenance.
