Layered lacquer box
A lacquer box is a lidded container whose substrate and built surface must be documented separately.
A glossy red or black box is not automatically lacquerware in the material sense. The archive records the core, ground, surface film and decoration as separate observations whenever evidence is available.
Wear and damage may reveal structure, but research must not create new damage. Photography, maker records and non-destructive examination take priority.
